2002 Audi A4 San Francisco CA

The basic upgrade program starts at the very core of the A4, where a new unibody boasts 45 percent more stiffness than its predecessor. Slightly longer, wider, and taller, this mid-sized Audi also gains a 1.3-inch stretch in wheelbase—0.9-inch of which is directly converted into much-needed additional rear-seat legroom.

Audi has given its best-selling model a major overhaul for 2002, and the results are impressive to say the least. Since its introduction in 1995, the A4 has established itself as a solid player in the entry-lux segment. Bolstered by numerous improvements throughout the package, this second-generation offering is destined to enjoy an even higher profile among its aspirational peer set.

While there's plenty to note in the latest A4, its most impressive technical innovation is an all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT). Initially available only in front-drive A4 models, this lightweight, compact "multitronic" CVT is destined to replace the existing Tiptronic transmission throughout the lineup within the next few years. (It will undoubtedly also see duty in other Audi products over time.)

Cleanly styled, new bodywork adds an extra measure of flair to the established A4 family look while a tidied-up underbody helps minimize lifting forces, fore and aft. The net result is a noticeable reduction in wind and road noise plus enhanced stability.
