7-Keto Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)

Introduction

Not to be confused with DHEA, 7-keto DHEA is a slightly different form of the DHEA molecule. Both are produced in the human body and researchers refer to 7-keto DHEA as a metabolite of DHEA, meaning 7-keto DHEA is produced during the natural breakdown of DHEA in the body.

Although DHEA has received a lot of press for its potential ability to slow the aging process, 7-keto DHEA has recently come into the limelight. Scientists now believe it may provide all the benefits of DHEA without the potential side effects of its popular predecessor. Because 7-keto DHEA cannot trigger potentially dangerous levels of estrogen and testosterone in the body- which can occur in some patients who use DHEA-scientists now think 7-keto DHEA may be a safer alternative.

Human production of DHEA normally peaks during our mid-20's and then begins a steady, progressive decline. DHEA is only produced in the bodies of humans and other primates such as monkeys and apes. There are no good dietary sources of DHEA other than by way of supplementation.

25 to 200 mg daily.

100 mg twice daily for weight loss; 50 to 100 mg daily for anti-aging.

Reported Uses

As a result of clinical studies on 7-keto DHEA, researchers have identified three major areas of potential benefit. As mentioned, the most popular use for DHEA and 7-keto DHEA centers on its potential for slowing the aging process. Indeed, some researchers have called DHEA an anti-aging breakthrough. Studies suggest that elderly patients who take DHEA may enhance muscle strength and lean body mass. Other benefits may include enhanced energy and sex drive, improved mood and sleep patterns, and a greater capacity to deal with stress.(1) Although human studies have not been conducted, studies in animals suggest that DHEA may be helpful for improving memory and related cognitive functions.(2)

7-keto DHEA has also been studied for its potential immune-boosting properties. Researchers think that it may stimulate the activity and effectiveness of crucial immune system components known as T-lymphocytes. These T-lymphocytes may in turn stimulate additional immune system functions.(3) Studies based on these observations suggest that 7-keto DHEA may have a future as an important immune system enhancer.(4)(5) Thus, 7-keto DHEA could prove to be therapeutically useful in a wide range of conditions, including major killers such as cancer. Studies also suggest that DHEA may reduce the replication of the HIV virus, making it a potential weapon in the fight against the AIDS virus.(6)

Lastly, 7-keto DHEA may positively influence thyroid function and metabolism.(7) Scientists believe that 7-keto DHEA's support of thyroid function may help patients reduce body weight and body fat. In fact, one clinical study of patients who took 7-keto DHEA seems to support the hypothesis that the supplement can enhance weight loss.(8)

This dietary supplement is considered safe when used in accordance with proper dosing guidelines.A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study of 22 healthy men demonstrated that 7-keto DHEA was safe and well-tolerated at a dosage of 200mg per day for up to four weeks.(9)

Pregnancy/Breast-Feeding
To date, the medical literature has not reported any adverse effects related to fetal development during pregnancy or to infants who are breast-fed. Yet little is known about the use of this dietary supplement while pregnant or breast-feeding. Therefore, it is recommended that you inform your healthcare practitioner of any dietary supplements you are using while pregnant or breast-feeding.

Age Limitations
This supplement should not be used with children unless as recommended by a physician.
