When you make the decision to create and maintain a website, one choice you will have to make is what web host company you would like to use. Much of the web host decision will depend on cost and need, but part of it will have to do with platform.
There are two host platforms from which to choose, Linux and Windows. Which you choose to use will be mostly based on what web design program and language you intend to use. Website languages, like PHP, Perl, and MySql will all work best with a Linux platform, while software like Visual Basic will only work on Windows platform.
If you intend to hire someone to design and maintain your website, be sure to allow him or her to be a part of the web host decision-making process. They will know what platform is needed since they will be building the site.
