About Exterior Shutters

Written by Pacific Columns - Pacific Columns

A shutter literally shuts out intruders as well as the rain, wind, and dust from entering a home or building. First used in ancient Greece, shutters have been popular since colonial times. They are today an important aspect of functional window treatment and add both character and aesthetic value to an exterior.

Over the years many different shutter styles and innovations developed. Colonial buildings had simple functional straps and hinges, Victorian ones had astounding ornamentation and complex patterns, while Federal homes had stylized shutter dogs that made a definite statement. Paneled shutters were preferred for downstairs windows while louvered shutters were installed on the windows of upper floors. Soon, hardware like knobs, hinges, pulls, plates, bolts, and shutter dogs began to reflect different architectural styles and came in matching sets that set a fashion trend.

Today there are many choices, one can have old shutters lovingly renovated and installed or newly made louvered, board- and-batten, raised panel, combination, cut outs, or Bahama style shutters. Made from yellow pine, basswood, redwood, cedar, plywood or vinyl, shutters can be made to last a lifetime by painting or staining.

When selecting a shutter it is important to check that the louvers are smooth and have the desirable tension. The material used is properly processed and finished. The shutters are appropriately sized and mortised for hinges and that rabbeted stiles are present between panels to reduce light breaks. If painted the coat must be smooth, thick, and complete and if stained there should be a protective outer coat. Always ask to view or handle a shutter sample and check out the credentials of the manufacturer.

Simple to install, attractive, and available in a number of variations, homeowners and architects are using shutters in window treatments to insulate the building, regulate light and air currents, and lend a sense of design to neighborhoods. Custom made or mass produced, shutters have an extensive life expectancy, and are attractive, durable, and functional.

Consider carefully the elements of design and harmony when selecting shutters. Shutters must be fitted with care and painted such that they match the facade of the house and window frame. Aesthetic, practical, and affordable shutters are an innovative way of improving or revamping a building exterior.
