To display the Apple TV Settings menu, press Menu on your Apple Remote until you're backed out all the way to the top-level Apple TV menu (you'll see the cool Apple TV logo). Next, move the selection cursor to the Settings menu and press Play/Pause to display the entries.

The major headings on the Settings menu go like this:

  • About: This screen displays identifying information and statistics about your Apple TV, like the total capacity and how much space remains, the software version you're running, the connection and resolution you're using, and the signal strength of your wireless network connection.
  • TV Resolution: Choose this Settings menu item to run the Resolution Selection Wizard.
  • Network: The items in this menu allow you to run the Wireless Configuration Wizard again, as well as to manually configure your TCP/IP settings. (In general, you shouldn't have to manually set your network configuration, but if an Apple technician or your office network administrator needs to tweak settings, you can do it here.)
  • Screen Saver: Choose this Settings menu item to change and preview your screen saver setting, including the inactivity delay (in seconds) before the screen saver starts.
  • Repeat Music: Turn this menu item on to repeat the current playlist until you exit with the Apple Remote.
  • Sound Check: Try this setting: Turn Sound Check on, and your Apple TV makes sure that all the volume levels within each music track remain constant. (Think Air Supply followed by Black Sabbath.)
  • Sound Effects: Choose this setting to mute all those subtle beeps, clicks, and boops while you're moving through the Apple TV menu system.
  • HDMI Brightness: If your Apple TV has an HDMI connection to your TV, you can choose either a low or high brightness setting for your display.
  • Pair Remote: This menu item allows you to pair your Apple Remote to your Apple TV, making sure that the commands you send with that remote are recognized only by your Apple TV.
  • Update Software: Choose this menu item, and your Apple TV "phones home" to Apple to see if any software updates can be installed.
  • Language: Choose this menu item to select the onscreen language.
  • Legal: Oh, boy, this Settings menu item displays all the legalese and copyright information pertaining to your Apple TV. Great fun at parties.
  • Reset Settings: If you're experiencing problems with your Apple TV unit, choose this menu item to restore all the settings on the Settings menu to their default values.

Now, a year down the line, Apple has unveiled the second generation touch. At first glance, little appears to have changed, but the device is now distinctly slimmer - around 8mm deep, as opposed to 12mm for the iPhone. In your hand it feels even thinner, as it shares the contoured back of the iPhone 3G.
