One of the most popular pets in America today is the ferret. With their mischievous personalities and playful nature many people find ferrets to be a very entertaining and lovable pet. There is much more to ferret ownership than simply playing with your new friend. Before deciding to adopt a ferret, there are several factors to consider.

  • Legality: The first step before adopting a ferret is to check your local laws and regulations regarding ferret ownership. In some states and municipalities ferret ownership is illegal. Check with the authorities where you live to make sure you are on the right side of the law before you adopt a new friend.
  • Time Commitment: Ferrets are naturally very playful and curious little animals, and will require much more time and interaction than other pets. A ferret kit is able to run and play nonstop for up to six hours. An older ferret will be just as active, but for a shorter period of time. Before you decide to adopt a ferret, be sure that you have enough time to devote to giving your ferret the interaction and play time that it requires.
  • Space: Due to their active nature, ferrets require a good deal of space. The first space you will have to devote to your ferret is a large wire cage enclosure where the ferret can sleep and eat. Because they are always on the go, a large cage is essential to keep your ferret safe and healthy.
  • Ferret-proofing: Ferrets want to be a part of the family, and will not be content to spend their days cooped up inside a cage. Plan to spend time ferret-proofing your home. You will be surprised at the places your new friend will be able to squeeze into.
  • Training: Ferrets are very intelligent and trainable; however training a ferret to use a litter box can take much more time and patience than training a kitten or puppy. Before you decide on adopting a ferret, research the amount of time it will take to train your ferret in general, and litter box training in particular.
  • Finances: Having a ferret as a pet is a financial commitment as well as an emotional one, beginning with the adoption fees for your new friend. Adopting a ferret from a pet store will cost in the neighborhood of $100-$150 dollars. If you adopt a ferret from a ferret rescue organization or a shelter, you can expect to pay between $25 and $100, depending on the organization. On top of this initial expense, ferret adoption will lead to paying for regular veterinarian visits, inoculations, and medications. Neutering and descanting male ferrets is a must. An unexpected expense would be many ferret owners dont consider is damage to your home. Ferrets are very curious animals, and will get into anything you leave unattended, often causing damage in the process. Also even the well-trained ferret will sometimes forget to use the litter box, and leave a smelly reminder for his owner. Anyone considering ferret adoption should add these expenses to their pet budget.

Finding cheap ferret cages doesn't necessarily mean finding low quality ferret cages. But remember never to let your desire for a bargain get in the way of finding a safe, study home for your beloved pet. A good find for a cheap ferret cage includes a two level wire cage with a solid floor with bar spacing small enough to prevent escape, but wide enough to provide good ventilation.
