  • Preposition + noun (noun phrase): D'habitude il arrive en retard. (Generally, he arrives late.)

    • à droite (to the right)

    • à gauche (to the left)

    • à l'heure (on time)

    • à present (now)

    • de temps en temps (from time to time)

    • d'habitude (generally)

    • en retard (late [in arriving])

    • sans doute (without a doubt)

  • Preposition + adjective: En général elle est très heureuse. (Generally, she is very happy.)

    • d'ordinaire (ordinarily)

    • de nouveau (again)

    • en général (generally)

  • Preposition + adjective + noun: Il fait le travail de bon cœur. (He does the work willingly.)

    • à tout prix (at any price)

    • de bon cœur (willingly)

    • de bonne heure (early)

    • en même temps (at the same time)

  • Preposition + adverb: Il a fait au moins deux erreurs. (He made at least two mistakes.)

    • à jamais (forever)

    • au moins (at least)

    • du moins (in any case)

  • Preposition + several words: Peu à peu ils font du progrès. (Little by little, they make progress.)

    • encore une fois (again)

    • peu à peu (little by little)

    • peut-être (perhaps, maybe)

    • tant pis (too bad)

    • tout à l'heure (soon)

Certain adverbs used to express quantity are followed by de or d' (before a vowel). Remember that no article is used before a noun: Elle a beaucoup d'enfants. (She has a lot of children.)

  • assez de (enough of)

  • autant de (as much, many)

  • beaucoup de (much, many)

  • combien de (how much, many)

  • moins de (less, fewer)

  • peu de (little, few)

  • plus de (more)

  • tant de (so much, many)

  • trop de (too much, many)
