Dogs and puppies are wonderful and can make fantastic companions and additional family members but there are some things that can be rather frustrating that go along with owning one of these pets. Whether you have a new puppy or have adopted an older dog who needs training, one of the first things that you re going to need to do if your dog is indoors is to house train it.

Potty training your pup is a must. Not only can it help to save your floor, it will also help to start your dog off on the right foot when it comes to additional training. By using the following tips on house training your dog, you will be in a much better position with its overall obedience.

The first thing that you need to realize is that your new puppy will not have a bladder large enough that will allow it to hold it for a long period of time. You are going to have to be very frequent and persistent when it comes to house training right from the very start. This is especially the case whenever your puppy finishes eating or playing as these will be signals for it to go to the bathroom. Be constantly aware of your new puppy and as soon as it finishes one of these tasks, take it outside so that it will do its business where it should. Make sure that you reward the dog handsomely by praising it.

There may also be other times that your dog will need to go outside and you may not recognize it in advance. Many people use newspaper by the exit door in order to catch any mistakes that may take place until your dog learns to hold it. The simple fact that your dog learns to go to the door whenever it needs to go outside means that you re only one step away from finally housebreaking it.

If your puppy needs to be left alone for long periods of time, you might want to consider having a dog crate. Not only will this help to keep your new puppy out of mischief, they rarely will go to the bathroom when they re in a small environment. Don t worry about the dog not liking being caged up, many dogs learn to love this spot and will seek it out whenever they need to be by themselves.

The most effective way training a new puppy or dog is to reward them for good behavior. However, the opposite is not true; you should not punish them for bad behavior. You can either reward them by praising them or by giving them a small treat. If you decide to use to treat, make sure that you choose one that is healthy for the dog and then cut it into tiny pieces.

Although these are just a few tips on house training your dog, they can help you to realize the eventual goal. As long as you are persistent, your puppy will do well.
