2. What Does An Air Traffic Controller Do?

Air traffic controllers are the people who are operating the system of air traffic control. This system makes sure that there is an orderly and safe flow of air traffic. They also make sure that the traffic moves swiftly, with as little delay as possible. They are the people who keep the air traffic from running into each other. They are responsible for preventing midair collisions.

In order to keep the air traffic separate from each other, air traffic controllers apply separation rules. These are rules that are set in place to keep all airplanes and aircraft in their own space. They keep each plane it its own area of responsibility, and move each plane through their own areas to negotiate a smooth landing for each airplane.

An air traffic controller is a person who has a great deal of responsibility during his or her work day. Because of this, the profession of air traffic controller is regarded as one of the most difficult jobs. It is extremely stressful because they are alone responsible for the well being of each aircraft that is in the sky.

3. Skills for an Air Traffic Controller

An air traffic controller is a person who must have many skills. They must be able to possess these skills on a daily basis. An air traffic controller is one of the jobs that have strict regulations for each person – both on the job and off of the job.

The first thing that an air traffic controller must have is an excellent memory. They must be able to keep the positions of various planes in their heads at all times, as well as the rules and regulations that go along with these aircraft. They must also be organized, because they will be responsible for organizing the paths that all of the airplanes are taking. They also much have very good numeric computational skills. This is because they might not always be able to rely on calculators or computers to give them the information that they need to have.

There are other skills that an air traffic controller must have. First of all, they must be assertive, but also must remain calm under any pressure that they might have. This is important because they must not panic in any emergency situations. They must also have a drive to follow rules, but they must be able to change these rules or be flexible when the need arises. Air traffic controllers cannot be too bound by rules, nor can then always expect someone else to tell them what needs to be done. Often, they must think for themselves, and think on their feet. Air traffic controllers must be very good at communication, and must be trained to focus on the exact words that pilots are speaking. This is because even a slight misunderstanding about where a plane is or what they are doing can lead to a catastrophe in the air. Therefore, they must have a command over what the various words mean, and must be able to use the language well.

The other thing that an air traffic controller must have is a good ability to work well with a team. They must rely on teamwork with other controllers, other staff, pilots, engineers, and the managers that work with the team. If a person cannot work with several other people, they will not be able to be an air traffic controller.

4. Work Environment for an Air Traffic Controller

Air traffic controllers work at an airport or air field, usually in a place where they are able to oversee the general comings and goings of the aircraft. They communicate with pilots using radiotelephony technology. This is a push-to-talk system that allows only one transmission to be used on one frequency at a time.

There are two areas where air traffic controllers work. Some of them work in Area Control Centers. These are centers that facilitate high level aircraft or aircraft that is traveling en route. They might also work in Terminal Control Centers. These are centers that deal with controlling aircraft at medium levels, or when they are climbing or descending. These are the air traffic controllers that deal with landing and taking off.

Often, local languages are used between local air traffic controllers and the planes that are flying locally. However, the default language of the air traffic controller jobs is always going to be English. Therefore, anyone wanting to be an air traffic controller must be able to speak English and is usually asked to pass exams with certain English speaking standards.
