Originally published at Internet.comCertified Wireless USB (wUSB) chip maker Alereon has opened a new research and development (R&D) lab in Pune, India. The company says the lab focus on continued ultrawideband (UWB) chipset development, creating a next generation for use in new products.
The current Alereon chip is the AL4000. Last month that chip (made up of the AL4300 Media Access Controller/BaseBand Processor (MAC/BBP) and AL4100 WiMedia RF Transceiver) received certification from the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) for use in wUSB products. Iogear and Quanta Microsystems both plan to use the AL4000 in their upcoming wUSB products.
Eric Broockman, CEO of Alereon, said in a press release, "We are currently the only UWB company offering embedded device-to-device connectivity that is Certified Wireless USB from the USB-IF, and we are committed to leveraging that competitive advantage by investing in continued development."
The company headquarters is in Austin, Texas.
Alereon, among others, will be part of the WiMedia Alliance UWB learning showcase taking place in Montreal, Quebec, on Thursday May 10 at the Hotel Omni Mont-Royal. Other WiMedia members in attendances will include Intel, NXP, Staccato Communications, Tzero Technologies, WiQuest Communications, Wisair, and the USB-IF, among others.
