These statements show a flawed understanding of the relatively simple, but technically complex process called metabolism (from the Greek word "metabolismos - change"). There are two categories of chemical reactions that are part of metabolism. Catabolism is the breakdown of large molecules for energy and anabolism is how the body uses energy to make proteins and other cellular building blocks. However, when most of us talk about metabolism we're talking about our bodies' conversion of food into fuel, and often we blame our metabolism for not burning fat fast enough!
