American Airlines is among one of the largest U.S.-based airlines. It is the largest airline in the world in terms of total passengers-miles transported and passenger fleet size and, in terms of revenue, AA is the second-largest airline in the world, behind Air France. American Airlines is owned by AMR Corporation and is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, across from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. This airline operates scheduled flights throughout the United States, as well as flights to Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, Western Europe, Japan, China, and India. The company slogan "We know why you fly" reassures passengers that American Airlines understands its customers and continuously offers 100% customer satisfaction.

American Airlines is committed to providing a safe, dependable, and friendly air transportation to its customers, including several other services like "AAdvantage", "Business ExtrAA" and "AAirpass". The company is also dedicated to making every flight special for all customers. Safety, comfort, and convenience are the most important concerns that American Airlines continues to improve on.

American Airlines, initially names American Airways, was developed from an accumulation of 82 small airlines through a series of corporate acquisitions and reorganizations. These small airlines included Southern Air Transport in Texas, Southern Air Fast Express (SAFE) in the western US, Universal Aviation in the Midwest, and Colonial Air Transport in the Northeast.

By January 25, 1930, American Airways was incorporated as a single company. It was based in New York and had routes from Boston to Chicago, Illinois to Dallas, and a route from Dallas to Los Angeles. Then in 1934, E.L. Cord, who renamed the company "American Air Lines", acquired American Airways Company. Throughout its history, along with the history of the United States, American Airlines had to go through many changes and developments in order to serve more and more customers around the world.

Today, American Airlines serves 260 cities with a fleet of 670 aircraft. AA carries 12.1 million passengers between the U.S. and Latin America, which is the most than any other airline. It is also strong in the trans/inter/intra/continental market. The company also has five hubs: Dallas/Fort Worth (the airline's largest hub), Chicago, Miami, St. Louis and San Juan. Furthermore, Los Angeles, New York City-Kennedy, New York City-LaGuardia, Boston and Raleigh Airports all serve as focus cities and international gateways. Maintenance bases at located at Tulsa, Kansas City, and Fort Worth Alliance Airports.

Along with destinations in the U.S., American Airlines provides its services to four continents. Its network is particularly developed in the Americas and its hubs serve as major gateways there. More importantly, American Airlines is the only U.S. airlines with schedules flights to Anguilla, Bolivia, Dominica, Grenada, Uruguay, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. In recent years, American has begun to expand its network in Asia with introductions and a re-introduction of non-stop flight. The flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Osaka, which had been discontinued after the September 11th terrorist attacks was re-introduced in 2005 but then discontinued just a year later. The launching of non-stop service from Chicago to Nagoya was also introduced but ended within a year. The introduction of services from Chicago to Delhi and from Chicago to Shanghai, is becoming profitable.

American Airlines offers a frequent flyer program, which has become especially attractive to committed AA passengers. AAdvantage is the first such loyalty program in the world, and remains the largest with more than 50 million members. Travel miles accumulated in the program allows members to redeem tickets, upgrade service class, or obtain free / discounted car rentals, hotel stays, merchandise, or other products and services through partners. The most active members, based on the amount and price of travel booked, are designated AAdvantage Gold, AAdvantage Platinum, and AAdvantage Executive Platinum elite members, with privileges such as separate check-in, priority upgrade and standby processing, or complimentary upgrades.

AA is a partner in the alliance of "Oneworld". Oneworld is an alliance of 10 of the world's leading airlines, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, and Japan Airlines. The idea behind Oneworld is to offer a truly global network and a range of services and benefits that no single airline could offer on its own, making the worldwide travel for passengers easier and more rewarding. This alliance extends to almost 700 destinations in 150 countries around the world.
