20% of a Bai Bian Dou cold saline extract (0.3ml) could promote the formation of active E-rosettes. This activity could mean that Bai Bian Dou could enhance T-lymphocytes and promote cellular immune functions.( 6) Studies also indicate that Bai Bian Dou can promote the recovery of weakened immune functions.( 7)
Bai Bian Dou can restore the reduction the amount of mouse total leukocytes induced by cyclophosphamide to the normal level.( 8)
1g/ml of a Bai Bian Dou decoction can inhibit Bacillus dysenteriae as well as show detoxifying effects on vomiting and acute gastroenteritis induced by food poisoning.( 9) In addition, this decoction of the seed had inhibiting effects on the Columbia SK virus in mice.( 10)
Contained in the seed, non-specific lectin has certain characters of globulin. It is water-soluble and inhibits thrombase. When in the concentration of 10mg/ml, it could postpone the blood clotting time from 20 minutes to 60 minutes. When isolated and purified from the herb, studies have shown that DLA, which is extracted from Bai Bian Dou, has similar effects as ConA. It has strong coagulation effects on red blood cells, independent of specific blood types.( 11)
