Is Bait and Switch a Spam Technique?
Author: temp_93910The bait & switch tactic has been a scam long before the advent of the internet. Today, bait and switch is used as a scam technique by many unprofessional web promotional experts, especially when it comes to adult website promotion.
In SEO, bait and switch tactics is considered a spam technique. Web promotion experts provide a web page for users and a different web page for the search engine, at the same URL. Sometimes experts submit an optimized page to search directories, but replace it with a page full of irrelevant ads as soon as the optimized page gets indexed. This technique is followed by many SEO experts, including adult web site promotion experts.
Nowadays, Bait & Switch tactics are also used in a different way to “hack” site rankings of a good, content-rich site. The site rankings are highjacked by using a 302 redirect and stealing keyword-rich content. For example, ABC.com ranks in the number two slot in SERPs. A fairly new site XXY.com comes along and copies the keyword-rich content directly from ABC.com. Then the XXY site adds a 302 redirect from its site to the ABC site.
So, what’s the strategy here? Well, many will believe that the XXY site as a new page of ABC.com. The main reasons are: same content and the 302 redirect. This prompts a search engine to remove the ABC.com page, with the help of its duplicate content filter and, thus XXY replaces ABC in the SERPs.
But, Bait & Switch techniques have many drawbacks. If a person involved in adult web promotion uses this technique for an adult website, the site can get banned. This is because search engines have their own sophisticated bots and crawlers that visit a site several times and if they notice some suspicious changes, they will demote the site at the bottom of SERPs, thus affecting the adult web marketing strategy severely.
