Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is a modern airport with many services and facilities for both travelers and guests. The airport serves both the Baltimore and Washington DC metropolitan areas. The airport is located 10 miles south of Baltimore and 30 miles north of Washington DC. 2. Driving Directions to the Airport

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is just south of Baltimore and can be reached by driving on the I-195, which has its own BWI exit. Travel time by car from the airport to downtown Baltimore is around 25 minutes and around 50 minutes to Washington D.C. Aviation Boulevard surrounds the airport and Dorset Road allows access to the airport from every direction.

From Baltimore, drive on Russell Street which will turn into the Baltimore/Washington Parkway (295), and follow the Parkway heading south to I-195 and then the airport. You can also follow the signs to the Downtown/Inner Harbor area and then take the I-395 to the I-195 south, through Washington DC. Stay on the I-195 and take the BWI exit.

From Washington DC, drive on New York Avenue to the Baltimore/Washington Parkway heading north to the I-195 taking the BWI exit.

From Annapolis, Maryland, drive north on the I-97 or take US 50 crossing the Bay Bridge to Annapolis, catching the I-97 driving north to the airport. Take the Dorsey Road exit and follow the signs to the airport.

The access roads to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport experience rush hour traffic in the morning and late afternoon rush hours, as well as on holidays. The buses travel to some of the main destinations, which are Washington DC, Baltimore, Columbia, Calvert, Glen Burnie, Annapolis, and Odenton. The buses are the most inexpensive way to travel to and from the airport. The bus stops are located near the exits of the lower level.

There are shuttle buses available from the airport to surrounding areas. Two of the more popular shuttle buses are the Super Shuttle and the Airport Shuttle. These shuttle buses travel to Baltimore and other areas in Maryland. You can catch the Super Shuttle right outside the terminal’s lower level.

There are many providers of accommodations around the airport that have courtesy hotel shuttles for both the pick up and drop off of passengers. You should arrange the hotel shuttle in advance, if possible, before you arrive, so you can get to your accommodations easily and quickly. You pick up the hotel shuttles right outside the terminal’s lower level. Check with your hotel to find out if they offer these free shuttles.

The airport has a selection of private car and RMA Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation services available. These are VIP services where you can travel, first class, from the airport to Baltimore, Washington DC, and the surrounding areas. To make sure there are no delays, it is recommended that you arrange for these services before you reach the airport.

There are many taxis available at the airport that can take you to various destinations. Many of the taxis at the airport have flat rates depending on where your destination is. There are extra charges for luggage, driving late at night, or on the holidays. The taxi stands are located outside the terminal’s lower level Baggage Claim area.

4. Rail Travel to and from the Airport

There is a Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport railway station (BWI Rail Station) located a mile for the terminal. There are free shuttle buses that take you to and from the station to the airport. Both Amtrak and the MARC Penn Line, on weekdays, serve the BWI Railway Station. From the BWI Railway Station, it will take around 10 minutes to Penn Station in Baltimore and 35 minutes to Union Station in Washington DC. The MARC tickets to Baltimore are $4 and $6 to Washington DC. The trains run every hour 7 days a week, and they depart more often during peak travel hours on the weekdays. Right outside the International Terminal at the airport, there is a Maryland Transit Administration Rail line stop. This travels to destinations in and around Baltimore and offers transfers to Baltimore’s Metro Subway. A one-way ticket to the Metro Subway is $1.60. You can also buy a pass that is good all day for $3.50, giving you access to the light rail, city buses, and travel on Baltimore’s Metro Subway. The Metro Subway takes around 30 minutes from the airport to downtown Baltimore, and it runs every half hour and every 20 minutes during peak hours.

5. Facilities at the Airport

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has many services and facilities spread throughout the five concourses. Within the terminal building, there are conference facilities, business centers, Internet access points, postal services, and a currency exchange bureau. Considering many travel to the area for business, the airport has more business facilities than many other airports in the United States.

In the airport there are two Travelex business service centers that are located in the terminal’s upper level. One is located across from the America West ticket desk, and the other is located right next to the Garden Court Café adjacent to Concourse E. The business centers at the airport offer currency exchange, traveler’s checks exchange, fax machines, phone cards, photocopying (only in Concourse E), and a Western Union. You can also purchase travel insurance at the concourses at the airport. The Friendship Center and CK’s Catering also offer conference facilities.

The airport has three ATM machines located on the upper level and two on the lower level. There are four postal counters that offer both standard and express mail services. Currency exchange is offered at the Travelex business centers. There is free Internet access all through the terminal building. There are many pay phones located throughout the terminal as well as courtesy airport phones. The airport has a sleeping room with wake-up calls available and a TV lounge with a large library of movies. There are information desks spread throughout the terminal. 6. Shopping at the Airport

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport offers a wide array of shopping and eating possibilities. Many of the specialty shops are located in Concourse A and B. Two shops in this area are Fire and Ice and Celebrate Maryland, where there is a wide assortment of souvenirs. Concourse E is where the duty free shops are located. There are five Hudson Newsstands, one on each concourse located at the airport, where you can find books, magazines, newspapers, and snacks. There are retail shops located in Concourse A and B such as the Body Shop and Sunglass Hut.

7. Dining at the Airport

The airport has many eating and drinking options, which are on the upper level. Some of the options are cafes, restaurants, fast food stops, and bars. Most of the dining and eating options are located in Concourse A and B. Just a few of the eating options at the airport are McDonalds, Taco Bell, Uncle Teddy’s Pretzels, Hudson Euro Café, and Auntie Annie’s. Some of the drink options, many of which sell food, are the Budweiser Brewhouse, Beer Garden, Sam Adams, Fells Point Brew Pub, Preakness Lounge, and University Lounge.

8. Parking Options at the Airport

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has many parking options, as the airport has both covered parking and surface parking available. There are two parking garages located at the airport with both long-term and short term parking available. Passengers can also use the BWI Railway Station parking lot. There are over 30,000 parking spaces at the airport. All the parking areas are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The parking areas are well lit and are serviced by police and 24-hour surveillance cameras. Each parking area has disabled parking spaces near ramps and lifts. You pay for parking as you exit the parking areas and you can use cash or credit cards. You can also pre-pay using the “Pay and Go” machines that you can find on the Skywalk.

The Hourly Garage parking area can be easily reached from the I-195. The Hourly Garage is connected to the airport terminal by the Skywalk bridges. At the Hourly Garage the first hour is free, so it is a popular option for the pick up and drop off of passengers. The Daily Garage parking has over 8,000 parking spaces and can be used for both long and short-term parking. You can get from the Daily Garage to the terminal with the free 24-hour shuttle. There are Express Parking Service lots that tend to be used for long-term parking. This is a popular lot for people that leave their cars as it allows for easy access to the I-195. This lot also has free 24-hour shuttles to the terminal. The long-term lots are farther way from the terminal, but are still serviced regularly by free shuttles to and from the terminal. The airport has many disabled parking spaces at each parking area. The disabled parking spaces are near ramps, lifts, and the covered shuttle stops. The courtesy shuttles are equipped to handle the disabled. There are also wheelchair escorts available, and it is recommended that disabled travelers call the Airport Information Desk beforehand, if they need wheelchair assistance or any other special needs.

9. Accommodations Near the Airport

There are many accommodation options near Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Many of the hotels near the airport offer free shuttle buses to and from the airport. Check with the hotel you are staying at to see if they have these courtesy shuttles available. Several of the hotels near the airport, such as the Hilton and Marriot, have extensive business and conference facilities.
