Finding a job is very tough with today's economy. Many people are actually over qualified for the jobs that they are applying for. If you have found yourself in a position where you are taking a job less than what your previous position is, it may be difficult to handle. Here are some tips on how to handle it when you are overqualified for a job.

  1. First of all, be grateful. There are millions of people out there that are unemployed and cannot find a job. Even if you are hired for a job that is "less" than you, you should be grateful. Starting all over again may be a difficult concept to grasp, but knowing that you have a job, and being grateful for whatever that job may be is very important.
  2. Next, do not let the people you work with know you are overqualified. You need to swallow your pride and try to be on the same level as your fellow workers. No ones wants to work with someone who brags about where they used to be. Yes, you may be overqualified for the job that you have, but at the same time it is the only job you can get right now.
  3. Lastly, and most importantly remember to respect your boss. Although you may be more educated, or feel that you are more qualified than even your boss, they are still your boss and you need to respect that. They are the person that signs your pay check, therefore you need to respect them, no matter what the circumstances are. Do not have it set in your mind that you are better than your workers, or your boss for that matter. We all come from different circumstances, having respect for one another will give you a common ground and make the work place a must more enjoyable experience.

Keep in mind that this position could have been given to anyone else. The fact that you are overqualified, does not give your permission to take this job for granted. Eventually this recession will pass, and you will soon be able to work your way up again. You should be able to handle being over qualified for a job if you follow the tips above.
