Beta Version: Can’t Beat It!

Author: Akhila Choudhary

Software passes through various stages before it comes into existence. Beginning from the development and lasting to the testing phase, it evolves at every level. A custom software company firm develops software and then releases it officially. Before such release there comes a version known as Beta release. Beta release refers to that version of the software that has passed Alpha testing. It is released outside the company for the testing purposes. It is basically a prototype of the original version that is still in the software product development stage. The main advantage of Beta version is that it provides usability testing. The Beta users or beta testers provide feedback to the company and hence it helps in improving the software quality. The main aim of Beta release is to test and upgrade the final version, which is yet to be released. It is an essential part of online software development.

The firms that undertake software product development projects provide the Beta version free of cost or at a reduced cost to the testers. These testers provide feedback and suggestions to the custom software company. Depending upon the tester group size, the release can be classified as Open Beta release or Close Beta release. Close Beta versions are released to selected individuals whereas Open Beta versions are for a larger community. Any custom software company prefers to go for Beta testing prior to its official product release. Generally, the Beta versions are considered to be a part of software product development stage and have lesser features than the final product.

The online software development firms build software around the client’s specifications. It is tested firstly at the developer’s site by the end users. It is known as Alpha testing. After this it is made available to the tester at the end user site i.e. Beta test. Hence, the Beta testing is essential in online software development to improve the overall functionality and quality of the final product.
