Movable Type is a professional-grade blogging
system that powers some of the largest and most widely
known blogs. Many professional bloggers choose Movable
type because of its reliable service, performance and ongoing
innovation. Deployment is quick and easy and the offthe-
shelf functionality is impressive, but support licenses
make Moveable type just slightly out of reach for a beginning
blogger. However, more of the technorati top 100
blogs run on Sixapart (the parent company of Movable
type) platforms than all other software combined.
WordPress is a powerful personal publishing platform
that comes with a great set of features designed to
make your blogging experience as easy as possible. Wordpress
is a freely distributed (open-source) platform that
is standards-compliant and by all accounts easy to use
(reflected in its massive user-base). the latest version is
stacked with features and provides a very customizable
core which can be built out even further with an array of
plugins from the Wordpress developer community. Wordpress
is an excellent option for those just getting started
blogging.
Serendipity is a pHp-powered weblog that gives
users the ability to easily create their own personal publishing
platform. the default package is designed for the
casual blogger but Serendipity is flexible and can be expandable
quickly and easily to power professional online
properties. Sophisticated plugin architecture allows you to
easily modify both the appearance of a blog and its features.
You can install more than 120 plugins with just one
click, instantly enhancing your blog's functionality. Serendipity
is also a good solution for beginners, although the
support community is not as robust as Wordpress.
Expression Engine is a commercial (with a free
version) blogging and content management system with a
good feature set and an excellent grouping of add-on modules
and plugins, including a moblog (mobile blogging),
wiki, simple commerce, member management solutions and
a comprehensive suite of security. The version tested here
was pMachine (free and deployed by thousands of websites
frequently through Fantastico) which has been absorbed by
ellislabs and now known as expression engine.
b2Evolution is a free, open-source blogging tool
available in many languages and includes many features
of traditional blog tools, and extends them with evolved
features such as file & photo management, advanced skinning,
multiple blog support as well as detailed user permissions.
there is also a broad set of third-party plug-ins, so
b2evolution scales nicely. One of the only downsides of
b2evolution is that it only works with MySQl databases
- so if you're not running apache, don't bother. there was
also some difficulty with the post editing feature, lowering
our ease-of-use score slightly.
