Botox is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. Millions of individuals undergo Botox injections each year and the trend is continuing. Botox was initially approved for use in the treatment of a spastic eye disorder. Over the past decade, it has been approved to treat wrinkles, sweating and facial lines.

Botox is derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Despite being a toxic poison, the toxin when administered at low doses can help reduce muscle spasm and induce temporary muscle paralysis

For the treatment of facial wrinkles and lines, Botox is injected with a very fine needle and this prevents the facial muscles from contracting or tightening, thus eliminating wrinkle formation. Botox however, is only a temporary solution for wrinkles

After the Botox injections, the results are not immediate. Most individuals see the loss of wrinkles at 1 week and the wrinkle free face lasts about 3 months.

The fine lines may disappear in all individuals injected with Botox, but the deeper wrinkles may still persist to some degree.

Botox is only recommended for use in individuals between the ages of 20-65 and the results are variable from individual to individual.

Botox is not recommended for use in

- pregnant females

- those who have a neurological disorder like myasthenia gravis

In the majority of cases, Botox injections are considered cosmetic and not covered by Medicare or private medical insurance

For those who want to maintain the wrinkle free look, Botox injections will be required at least 3-4 times a year.

The cost of Botox is variable and your surgeon may charge anywhere from $ 300- 600 for a tiny vial of Botox.
