The Botox Procedure

Botox injections are widely performed all over the country. The majority of individuals get Botox injections during a lunch time break. The procedure is usually one in the physician's office and rarely takes more than 5-15 minutes. There is no need for any anesthesia.

The procedure is not entirely painless and the small needle does sting. Some physicians may numb the area with a topical anesthetic prior to the injection.

Before the injections, all the sites are premarked and cleaned with an antiseptic solution. The Botox is then injected.

It generally takes three to seven days to take full effect and it is best to avoid alcohol at least one week prior to treatment. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped two weeks before treatment as well in order to reduce bruising

The toxins in Botox rapidly paralyze the muscles and stop the muscles which cause the wrinkles on the face.

Botox Is commonly used to treat

- forehead lines

- crow's feet (lines around the eye)

- Frown lines.

Wrinkles induced by smoking and sun exposure generally do not respond to Botox treatments.

The results of Botox are not always immediate and may take 5-7 days to become prominent.

The Botox injections last anywhere from 2-5 months

Side Effects of Botox

Botox is not without side effects. However, the side effects are minor and resolve rapidly. The most common side effects include

- Mild nausea

- Flu like symptoms

- Headache

- Redness

- Pain at injection site

Rarely the injection of botox may cause transient paralysis of the deeper muscles. This can lead to muscle weakness and dropping of the eyelids. When the deeper muscles or the eyelid muscles are paralyzed, the condition usually reverses in a few days. However, in some case, the paralysis may last a few months

After the procedure one can resume work and daily living activities right away.
