When you consider the history of trade shows and exhibiting in general, you start thinking about how long people have been selling things to one another. It’s a fundamental principle of business survival that has prevailed throughout history and around the globe.
Historically, trade shows likely started with people simply displaying their wares in public places. They took time to talk individually with potential buyers about what they have to offer. Then, they negotiated a purchase price (or barter) until a mutual agreement was met.

At one time, exhibiting was likely one of the only ways to “market” your product. And perhaps served as a necessary survival tactic to provide for families.

According to Robert B. Konikow in his book, Exhibit Design, the exhibit industry can trace roots to medieval European fairs and the ancient bazaars of the Middle East.

Today, exhibiting is a growing industry and one that is constantly changing. Ever since the early exchange of goods, people of all types have been looking for a better way to market their products.
