As a cat owner, you may be tired of your cats constantly climbing on your bookcases, shelves, and perhaps, even your refrigerator. Cats like to climb and they prefer high places. They may also be using their claws on your furniture. If you want your cat to stay off your own things, you may want to build cat furniture for them.

The first thing to know when building cat furniture is that it does not have to be expensive. You can actually build cat furniture from scraps of wood you may already have around the house, as well as carpet remnants.

Constructing cat furniture is quite simple. If you look at some of the ones for sale at a pet store, you will get some great ideas on building cat furniture. Choose a design you feel will be a good fit in the room it will be in and one your cats will like.

To build cat furniture in the shape of a tree, you will need plywood, two-by-fours, carpet, a hammer, nails, brackets, screws, and wood glue. Create a solid base from plywood and two-by-fours. The trunk of the tree can be made by a couple of two-by-fours, as well and you can include perches for them to rest on at various heights, including the top.

When you construct the cat furniture, just make sure you build it to hold their weight, using plenty of brackets and nails. Wood glue can also be used on the cat furniture to give it extra strength.

When you cover the cat furniture with carpet, you will want to use glue to hold it to the wood. You do not want to use staples, as your cats may get their toenails stuck when scratching. Make sure every piece of wood is covered with carpet to give it a more pleasing look and to make sure your cats do not dig at the wood.

To give your cats even more fun, you can hang toys at certain levels on the cat furniture. Instead of clawing at your things, they instead, will be playing with their own toys.

Many people often choose to build cat furniture instead of paying the high price at pet stores. Cat furniture can give your cats their own area to play, as well as relax and in the end, save your own furniture from being clawed and destroyed by their sharp nails.
