The first thing a person needs to know before he or she buys turtle food, is what kind of turtle do you have. Is it most commonly a land or aquatic turtle. By knowing what kind of turtle you have, is the first step in the adventure to buying turtle food. Turtles are not too picky about what they eat, but having a variety of foods can help stimulate their senses and to stay healthy. Bad feeding habits can lead to a poor quality of life for the turtle and can lead so serious illnesses and or diseases.

If you have a water turtle, then you should know that they are carnivorous animals. This means that they will mostly eat meat. Raw hamburger meat would be a great choice for these type of turtles. However, some water turtles like to eat live food such as: minnows, gold fish, earthworms and crickets. Anyone can buy these little creatures from a local pet store. Also at a pet store, you can buy trout pellets or turtle food sticks. These are very nutritionally complete and does not make a big mess. Make sure that you know your turtle is a water turtle before feeding it the foods that have been suggested.

Not only are there just water turtles, but there are also land turtles. Turtles that live mainly on land are vegetarians. A box turtle is a very well known household pet. A variety of fresh fruits and vegetables should be enough to eat. Diced carrots, broccoli, strawberries, cucumbers, chopped apples, and cantaloupe are some foods that would be great for a land turtles diet. It is said that lettuce is great to give to turtles, but it has absolutely no nutritional value and should be completely avoided at all times. If you were to have a dog in your house, then you could always feed the turtle small amounts of lean dog food. When doing so, you should always mix the dog food with any of the fruits and vegetables that were suggested above.

In conclusion, it all depends on whether or not your turtle is a water or land lover. When that is determined, then the proper type of foods can be bought for him or her. It is always important to feed your turtle the correct diet of foods, so that he or she can live a long, healthy, enjoyable life with you and your family.
