Purchasing a used car can turn out one of two ways, it can go very smoothly with both parties being very happy and you the buyer ending up with a great car for a great price, the other way it can go is the whole experience turning out to be a complete nightmare which will live with you for a long time as a result of buying a heap of junk or being ripped off. There are a few steps you can take to make sure you're buying a nice reliable car which you came to purchase in the first place.

If you are considering purchasing a used car, it is essential that you go for an extensive viewing, everything must be checked and scrutinised, don't be afraid to ask the owner any questions, you will usually get a gut feeling pretty quickly. Ask to see the car's paper work such as MOT certificate, make sure all the details are correct and that the paperwork is not bodged. It would be an added bonus if the car owner has kept a full service history. Always ask how many previous owners the car has had and you could even get in touch with a previous owner to clarify some details. Always check to see if the chassis number matches the number on the documents, if not it's advisable you avoid the car like the plague. If you are satisfied with the documents and the condition, try going for a test drive to see how it drives, if there seems to be any problems it is again advisable to avoid. Check for external damage such as signs of a previous accident, always ask if something doesn't look right and always makes sure the condition of the vehicle represents the claimed mileage.

Always try to negotiate the price of the car, especially if you have the opinion that it's overpriced, only pay if you are happy with the price, otherwise look elsewhere. Take into consideration any improvements or repairs which will need to be carried out after the purchase and try to deduct it from the asking price. If you are buying from a dealer it is advised to pay via debit or credit card as they give you extra legal protection if something goes wrong. If you are purchasing from a private seller never hand over cash as it is harder to trace and verify, you should pay a private seller by back transfer or cheque as it gives you greater protection compared to cash.

Always make sure you are happy about every aspect of the purchase including the car, the price and the seller before you hand over the cash, once you have paid the amount in full it is very difficult to get your money back if something goes horribly wrong on your way home. The main thing to remember is not to take everything by face value, which includes trusting the seller just because he's a nice guy. Always ask plenty to questions and check everything, if you don't you may live to regret it.
