Canon Pixma MP800R User Guide Lawrenceville GA

Canon's MP800R is a printer and scanner with built-in networking. It prints colour images using four inks - cyan, magenta, yellow and black, and it also has a separate black cartridge for printing text. The ink tanks are transparent, making it easy to see when a colour is running low.

Canon's MP800R is a printer and scanner with built-in networking. It prints colour images using four inks - cyan, magenta, yellow and black, and it also has a separate black cartridge for printing text. The ink tanks are transparent, making it easy to see when a colour is running low. And because each colour comes in its own tank, you won't waste money replacing all the inks when only one has run out.

Print quality was mostly good. Colours looked natural and weren't over saturated or tinted with a colour cast. However, a six-ink photo printer would have handled photos better - some subtle details were lost because the printer couldn't quite produce a sufficiently broad range of tones. We're talking about very fine tones, though - unless you're a serious hobby photographer, you're unlikely to notice.

Our test scans, on the other hand, looked slightly washed out compared to the original images. Fortunately, it was fixed using either the advanced scan tools or the automatic "Fading" correction.

Like the Deskjet 6980, the MP800R is designed to be easily integrated into a network - as well as a standard USB connector, it has Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters built in. This is a great feature, but setup is needlessly complicated and poorly explained in the manual. We were also disappointed to discover that you always have to connect a PC via USB - only then can you configure it wirelessly. You don't want to have to lug a heavy multifunction device from one PC to another. You can cheat and install the printer over the network by using the Windows XP add/printer wizard, but it isn't possible to install the scanner in this way, so you'll still have to plug the MP800R directly into the PC you want to connect.TYPE scanner, copier and four colour printer CONSUMABLES black cartridge, photo black cartridge, cyan cartridge, magenta cartridge, yellow cartridge CONNECTION USB 2, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, PictBridge PRINT RESOLUTION 9600 x 2400 dpi SCAN RESOLUTION 2400 x 4800 dpi TESTED PRINT SPEED 9.2ppm mono PRINT COSTS 2.5p per page (mono), 6.7p per page (colour) SIZE 473 x 241 x 490mm
Canon's multifunction device prints well, but setting it up over a network is needlessly complicated.
