General Description: (Castro Laboreiro Livestock Guarding Dog, Castro Laboreiro Dog, Portuguese Cattle Dog) The Cão de Castro Laboreiro has a dense, weather-resistant coat that is coarse and slightly rough to the touch. The breed exists in a number of colors including black, mahogany, and chestnut.

Character: The Cão de Castro Laboreiro is a fearless flock guard with strong protective instincts. They are highly intelligent and brave, and they are very dominant. For this reason, the breed is sometimes aggressive with people it does not know. They are loyal, docile, and devoted to their owners. They are reliable and trustworthy with children in their family. They are very suspicious of strangers, and they will only obey the commands of their owner. They will only bark if they feel there is something wrong. The Cão de Castro Laboreiro requires a dominant owner. This breed can sometimes be difficult to control, and it is not recommended for first time dog owners. Heavy-handed or overly harsh training does not work with this breed.
