You may think that once you have installed a gutter system and have the right grading around your foundation that the job is done. This is not the case though as there is still some work to do in order to keep your gutters and draining system to work properly.

Here are a few tips that will give you a good draining system

You should make sure that the gutters are firmly attached to your roof. If you have a loose or broken fastener it may change the slope and therefore keep the water from draining from the troughs.

If you have seasonal gutters on your home you have to reseal them with either a caulk or a sealant that is specially designed for gutters. These can be found at most hardware stores.

The gutters you have can easily become plugged with such things as seeds, needles, and seeds. Because of this it is important that you keep the gutter cleaned out to prevent water blockage. You can use a hose or a high pressure washer to clean out your gutters. You should clean your gutters at least once a year and more if there are may trees in your area.

If it seems you are always cleaning your gutters it may be a good idea to install a kind of gutter guard. A gutter guard can help with keeping some of the larger leaves out of the gutter. You need to know that any gutter guard system you use will have some openings in order to let water in. Therefore seeds and other organic materials will still get caught in the troughs so you still need to clean them out periodically.

Over time soil compacts or will wash away over the seasons. Therefore it is important to maintain the grade that is present on your property. By placing some soil along your properties foundation, and then sloping it away, it can help keep water from getting in your basement.

When the rains come not all of it will hit the roof. Some of the rain will run down the sides of your home and into the window wells. You can put covers in order to keep runoff water out of the wells. They will also stop the rain from soaking into the ground that is beside the foundation walls.

It can be the case that your basement attracts a great deal of water. By keeping your gutters and downspouts clear you can make this happen less. It will also help to maintain the grade of your yard. Water will also build up less in your basement if the basement is warm and constantly dry.
