The American Staffordshire terrier is a loyal, hardworking, dedicated breed of dog. Its overall appearance is well-muscled and regal. American Staffordshire terriers have a confident, easy way about them that make them a favorite in many households across the country.

American Staffordshire Terriers are not a difficult breed to care for. The main consideration when selecting this breed of dog as a pet is exercise. Regular exercise is required to keep this working dog in top shape. American Staffordshire terriers, like most other working and terrier breed dogs are quite energetic. Regular exercise will go a long way in ensuring that you and your pet have a happy relationship.

The American Staffordshire terrier doesn t need much in the way of regular grooming. Their fine, short coat requires no brushing, unless it is to remove debris from the skin and coat, and should only be washed a couple of times a month to maintain skin and coat health. The American Staffordshire terrier, unlike many other breeds, is not known to have skin or coat conditions such as allergic dermatitis.

Many American Staffordshire terriers undergo an elective process to have their ears cropped ears, though this procedure is not necessary for the health of the animal. Dogs with erect ears generally have fewer problems with ear health as they receive adequate ventilation. Dogs with natural ears should have their ears visually inspected and swabbed weekly and after the dog has been exposed to water to avoid ear infections later.

The American Staffordshire terrier should have regular nail trimmings if he doesn t spend enough time outdoors to wear them away naturally. Also, debris should be wiped away from the eyes regularly, especially during the spring when allergens could trigger excessive tear production, in order to avoid a possible skin condition. Teeth should be monitored for plaque buildup and taken to the veterinarian for cleanings as recommended.

The American Staffordshire terrier is a very intelligent breed that will quickly make a nuisance of himself if not given enough to do. This breed does not lend itself to a couch potato existence, preferring instead to be entertained by ripping apart your couch, therefore it is vital to keep plenty of toys and chewing items available at all times.

All in all, the American Staffordshire terrier is a healthy, active and low maintenance breed of dog. A regular maintenance routine, consisting of bathing, nail trimming, and an overall head to toe examination monthly, is the best way to ensure that your dog is happy and healthy for years to come.
