Few floor coverings can match the comfort and practicality of wall-to-wall carpet. Technological innovations have made carpeting softer than ever before, broadened the range of available textures and colors, and, most significantly, turned it into a nearly maintenance-free floor topper, thanks to stain-, soil-, and odor-resistant treatments. Wall-to-wall carpeting is a natural insulator, too, able to absorb sound and keep warm—and cool—air from escaping. Plus it can be installed over a damaged or uneven surface, providing a quick and affordable alternative to more expensive flooring treatments.

And when pricing carpet, remember to add in the cost of installation ($3 to $6 a square yard) and padding ($2 to $6 a square yard).
