Nearly 100 years ago, New York socialite Maise Plant saw one of Pierre Cartiers two-strand pearl necklaces and had to have it. So she traded her Fifth Avenue mansion, still the brands Manhattan flagship, for the jewels. In celebration of its centennial, the French company is launching three collections sure to spark a new round of infatuation. Trinity, Cartiers signature trio of interlocking bandsa favorite of French poet Jean Cocteau, who wore two of the rings on his left pinkyis getting the star treatment, with a new set of diamond-studded baubles inspired by the cosmos. Next come six new jewel-encrusted editions of Cartiers storied Love bracelet, which, when launched in 1970, was an instant hit with celebrity couples such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and Ali McGraw and Steve McQueen. For art deco lovers, Cartier is also debuting Hypnose, a line of geometric black-and-white pieces inspired by a 1912 bandeau designed for Nancy Leeds, the future Princess Anastasia of Greece and Denmark. They are the jeweler of kings and the king of jewelers, Edward VII of England once said of Cartier. Of women, too.
