Chili’s was founded by Larry Levine when he wanted to implement a concept that created an informal but full-service dining restaurant. To put his ideas into play, Larry bought a postal station and converted it to build the first Chili’s location. It officially opened on March 13, 1975 in Dallas, Texas. After a few years, the restaurant proved to be successful and Mr. Levine decided to add 22 more Chili’s locations around the same area. A few years after these locations were added, Levine decided to the sell the company to its current owner, Norman E. Brinker of Brinker International. Chili’s has grown into a backyard name. With over 1,000 restaurant locations in 50 US States, Chili’s has also expanded globally, with 23 international locations, including Saudi Arabia, Australia, Mexico, the UK, Venezuela and within a few months, Guam.
Chili’s is also a proud supporter of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the fight against childhood cancer. Customers can help this cause when they dine at any Chili’s location in three different ways. The “Create-a-Pepper” process allows customers to purchase a Chili’s pepper coloring sheet for $1, color it in and have their design hung around the restaurant. Also, customers can purchase a Create-a-Pepper T-shirt for $12 or a Dog Tag/Key Chain for $6 from the Chili’s Create-a-Pepper online store at www.createapepper.net, as long as supplies last. Lastly, when customers purchase Chili’s Create-a-Pepper gift card, for every $25 purchased on the card, $1 will be donated. Along with St. Jude’s, Chili’s makes significant contributions to the Limbs for Life Foundation and to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
