The purpose of cat litter is to cover feces and to absorb your cat's urine. There are four types of cat litter: clay-based clumping, clay-based non-clumping, crystal litter and natural litter. Some cats will only use certain types of litter; you may have to try several types to find one your cat will use. Whichever type of litter you choose, make sure that you choose the right cat litter for your cat.

The first type of cat litter is a clay-based clumping litter. The advantage of using a clumping litter is that the urine will cause the litter to clump making it easier to remove from the litter box. Clumping cat litter offers the best odor control of all the types of litter, it is also the easiest litter to cleanup. It is recommended that the litter be completely changed once a month along with daily cleaning. Most cat owners choose this type of cat litter.

Another type of cat litter is clay-based non-clumping. This type of litter absorbs urine but does not form clumps. It is more difficult to cleanup non-clumping litter than the clumping variety. Owners choose non-clumping cat litter for its different scents and dust free formulas. This type of litter does not offer the best odor control. It is recommended that all of the litter be removed once a week and replaced with new litter. Litter may need to be changed more often if urine seeps to the bottom of the box and is not absorbed.

Crystal cat litter is generally made from sand. The sand absorbs the urine but does not form clumps for easy removal. Crystal cat litter offers a dust free and non-toxic choice for cat owners. When using crystal litter, it must be removed weekly and replaced with new litter.

The last type of cat litter you can choose for your cat is natural cat litter. Natural cat litters are made from corn, wheat, pine or paper. These types of litter are available in clumping and non-clumping forms. Natural cat litter is the best choice for cats or humans with allergies to dust because they are dust free. Many of the natural cat litter types are flushable and all are biodegradable. They offer great odor control and are non-toxic as well. If your cat is used to a traditional cat litter then it may not be the best choice of cat litter for your cat because of the different texture of the litter.
