Choosing the right dog food for your beloved pet is one of the most important decisions in health care. Your choice of the right dog food, however, can be very tricky. There are hundreds of brands that meet special needs of dogs. You must sit down and answer several questions about your pet in order to know those exact needs before choosing the right dog food.

The first thing to determine is your pet's age. Is he a puppy, an adult dog, or a matured dog? His needs will be different with his age.

A puppy needs a tremendous amount of the right things to help him grow and give him enough calories because he is so active. Choose a quality puppy food if your puppy is under one year old.

To choose the right dog food for an adult dog, you will need to determine his size and activity level. Some brands are made specifically for the size of dogs. This is done to keep calories at the right level. You will also need to determine the activity level of your dog. A working dog that herds sheep or cattle on a ranch will need many more calories than a small house dog that may get walked once a day. Besides the calorie consideration, an adult dog needs the right nutrition to maintain a healthy life into maturity.

If you need to choose the right dog food for a matured dog, his calorie needs will be a lot less because of his activity level. Most matured dogs slow down considerably and have special needs that need to be addressed through nutrition.

There are dog foods that address certain ailments such as poor digestion or a skin condition by adding the vitamins and minerals he needs to the food he eats. Though there are certain medications that address any ailment your dog may have, good overall nutrition that produces a healthy body makes it easier to treat any ailments your pet may be experiencing.

As you can see, there are several things to consider in order to choose the right dog food for your pet. Your first consideration will be to determine your pet's age. He has special nutritional needs because of his age. Activity level is the second consideration and the third thing to think about is specific health conditions that can be helped when you choose the right dog food. Choosing the right dog food is easy when you know his needs.
