Many consumers in Georgia are afraid of debt collection because they don't realize that there are limits as to what a collection agency can actually do. The idea behind the calls and letters that you might receive from a collection agency is simply to collect a debt. This debt has usually been sold by the original creditor to the collection agency and they simply want the money that is owed to them.

Many times debts are turned over for debt collection if you have failed to pay on them for months at a time or have failed to respond to bills sent by the creditor to you. It makes sense for them to sell the debt for a small loss than to never receive any of the debt. When you look at collection agencies in this way they become a lot less intimidating, since they are just trying to collect the money that is owed to them.

The problem is that many collection agencies that may contact you will use scare tactics and will threaten you with legal action, when the fact is, in most cases, the most that will happen is that you will have a blemish on your credit report until the debt is settled. Credit agencies want their money, and if you take an assertive approach with them and attempt to pay off the debt, you'll have no reason to be scared of their calls and letters.

3 . Dealing with Collection Agencies in Georgia

It's important to remember that collection agencies are simply trying to get you to pay your bill. Dealing with collection agencies does not have to be scary, instead you can use a calm, assertive approach to dealing with them. When they call your home, don't ignore their calls. Instead, pick up the phone and deal with them in a straightforward way. If you cannot afford to make any payments just let them know that and then try to let them know when you might be able to make payments.

Many times collection agency services will try to demand that you make a payment or that you make a full payment. Remind them that you are doing your best and that you will pay them when you can. It's a good idea to do this in a very friendly manner, but don't let them push you around. If you can, set up a payment plan that will allow you to pay a little bit at a time. Even if the bill is very large, making a $20 payment will make a dent in the debt, to the tune of $240.00 a year. 4 . Making Collection Agency Services Work for You

While collection agencies are out to get your debt paid off as soon as possible, you can actually make the debt collection process work for you. Many times you will be contacted by a contacted agency that wants to collect on a debt that you had forgotten about. This will allow you to address the debts and get them paid off. For many people in Georgia these debts will be $20 or $40 bills that were overlooked and simply not paid. A collection agency may give you a call or send you a letter informing you of the debt, making you aware of the debt.

Once you receive the notice you can contact the collection agency and ask them for the specifics about the debt to make sure that it is something that you really do owe on. Once you have confirmed that the debt is yours, you can pay it off, clearing up the debt and taking it off your credit report. This will allow you to better your credit! If you look at collection agencies in this way they will no longer be scary or something that you detest. Many times you can make them work for you. Even if the collection agency is attempting to collect a large debt you can take advantage of settlement offers or simply set up payments to clear the debt.
