The world of car insurance coverage can be a confusing place for many drivers. Since most of us are not insurance experts, and the required insurance coverage types vary from state to state, it is difficult to get a handle on exactly what you need with your car insurance coverage. Comprehensive coverage is just one facet of the many insurance coverage types available out there. Whether or not you purchase comprehensive coverage for your vehicle is going to depend on your needs as a driver and the requirements of your state laws for car insurance coverage.

2 . Doesn’t Comprehensive Mean Total?

The words “comprehensive coverage” can be somewhat misleading if you are not very familiar with car insurance coverage terms. Judging from the name, you might infer that comprehensive coverage is a total package for car insurance coverage. However, that is not quite true. In insurance terminology, comprehensive coverage refers to coverage for all driving-related incidents that are outside the realm of collision – and collision only includes accidents that involve other drivers or stationary objects.

The “comprehensive” in comprehensive coverage refers to all the things that might happen to your vehicle that are outside the realm of collision. As is often the case with most car insurance coverage, the definition of what is covered and what is not under a comprehensive coverage policy is going to vary from insurance company to insurance company. However, the basics of comprehensive coverage usually remain the same.

3 . What’s Covered (And What’s Not)

So, what exactly does comprehensive coverage insure you against as a motorist? Perhaps one way to answer this question is to review what is not covered under a comprehensive coverage policy. Other types of policies cover damage to your vehicle and other vehicles that may be involved in what can be called “regular” accidents. The most common and self-explanatory example of this is collision coverage. As its name suggests, collision coverage will pay to repair your vehicle if you are in a collision, or moving accident. For example, if you and another driver collide on the road, or if you veer off a slippery winter road and into a guardrail, damage to your car will be paid for by the insurance company if you have a collision coverage policy.

Comprehensive coverage, therefore, covers just about anything else that damages your car that is not the result of a collision – which is why comprehensive coverage is also referred to as “Other Than Collision” coverage. This often includes damage from rocks or other debris on the road, natural disasters such as earthquakes, flooding, or tornadoes, and fire damage, which may occur if your vehicle is kept in a garage. Another important aspect of comprehensive coverage is that this car insurance coverage will pay for damages that are incurred through vandalism or theft. If you live in a major city where vehicle theft and vandalism are common, getting comprehensive coverage for your vehicle can really help you get through what could be a major tragedy for your car.

One interesting fact to note is that comprehensive coverage will pay for damages to your vehicle in cases of collisions with animals, while collision coverage will not. This is the case for both domestic animals, such as cows and horses, and wild animals, such as deer and moose. If you live in an area where large animals have access to roads and highways, you may want to consider getting comprehensive coverage for your vehicles.

4 . Who Needs Comprehensive Coverage?

Just like with any car insurance coverage, comprehensive coverage policies are an added expense to your monthly or annual car insurance bill. However, depending on your needs as a motorist and the requirements of your state insurance laws, it may be an expense that will pay off for you in the long run. How can you tell if you need comprehensive coverage on your insurance policy? There are several reasons you may need this insurance coverage type.

One is whether you live in an area that has a high risk of incidents that are covered by comprehensive policies. For example, as previously mentioned, if you live in a major metropolitan area or a city that has a high auto theft rate (such as Modesto, California; Detroit, Michigan; and Buffalo, New York), having comprehensive coverage will prove invaluable if your vehicle is ever stolen or broken into. There are also natural disasters to consider when deciding if you need comprehensive coverage for your vehicle. You may want to pick up a comprehensive coverage policy if you live in the Midwest tornado belt, a coastal state like Florida or Louisiana with a high likelihood of hurricanes, any Northern state where there is a good chance of heavy snow or ice damage to your vehicle, or in a state with a history of earthquakes such as California.

Another factor in deciding whether you need comprehensive coverage is your state law regarding certain types of vehicles, or the requirements of the dealer. In general, there are no entire state governments that require comprehensive coverage for all insured vehicles. Though you may not need to have comprehensive coverage in order to register your vehicle with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, in some cases there are other factors that will require you to purchase this insurance coverage type.
