Crate & Barrel

Crate and Barrel is nationally known for providing a variety of household products to customers around the Unites States. It is dedicated to selling trendy and top of the line items ranging from dishtowels to espresso makers, salt and peppershakers to champagne glasses, table lamps to media centers, and even larger items like sofas, loveseats and outdoor furniture.

In order to keep customers continuously satisfied, Crate and Barrel offers a few ways to ease the purchasing process for potential and current customers. There are over 145 store locations around the nation where customers can physically make purchases. However, not all products are displayed in the stores so Crate and Barrel sends out catalogues a few times throughout the year to update customers with new and current products. These catalogues are particularly useful during the holiday seasons as customers try to avoid the holiday rush and purchase gifts for family and friends directly from the booklet. Within the catalogues, products are shown in real-life settings with pages depicting colorful and themed rooms to help customers see which products and styles match with one another. The company website, www.crateandbarrel.com, is also a good way for customers to easily purchase items. The website is designed for customers who want to browse through the products and also for customers who already know what they would like to purchase. The website organizes products by department, making it easy for customers to navigate through the system to find items that they are searching for.

One of Crate and Barrel’s main philosophies is “Good things come in 3’s. And P’s. People. Product. Presentation.” The people involved in the success of Crate and Barrel is never overlooked or taken for granted. The company values the ideas and inputs of all customers, employees and vendors. When an employee takes the time to offer a customer advice and knowledge about specific products, this action is valued by Crate and Barrel. When a dedicated customer buys a product and refers the Crate and Barrel name to a friend, this is also valued because this will advance the success of the company. These relationships help move Crate and Barrel forward in order to gain advantage over its close competitors.

Providing customers with the best products possible is another passion that Crate and Barrel entails. If Crate and Barrel can continuously provide customers with a wide range of options and at the same time redesigning products to keep them at a high-quality design then it will once again be able to branch off from the typical household and furniture stores and gain a successful reputation.

Crate and Barrel relies on making good first impressions. At Crate and Barrel, products are presented in a way that helps the customers eyes focus on shape, form, color and function. For example, the Furniture Collections is arranged in a clean, architectural setting designed to make customers feel as if they are sitting in their living rooms. Furthermore, Crate and Barrel presents multiple products together to help customers determine which shapes or colors work best together.

Crate & Barrel is based in Northbrook, Illinois and was founded by husband and wife team, Gordon and Carole Segal. Together, they organized their small family business and opened the first store in 1962, in a bohemian Old Town neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. During its 45 years in business, Crate and Barrel has expanded to store locations around the US and has acquired two sister stores called CB2 and The Land of Nod.

CB2, which is geared toward young adults, offers the same types of products as Crate and Barrel but the styles and designs are far more trendy and contemporary. CB2 currently has three store locations. Two are located in Chicago, Illinois and the third is in New York, New York. Though store locations are limited, the company website www.cb2.com offers delivery of its products to Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories.

The Land of Nod is a company that is very similar to the styles of Crate and Barrel and CB2 but the products are mainly targeted for babies and children. Flatware, cutlery and blenders are replaced with strollers, toys and diaper bags on the website, www.landofnod.com. Store locations are also limited to a total of 5 in only 2 states, Washington and Illinois. Delivery is also offered through The Land of Nod however, shipping rates increase if these deliveries are to locations that are outside of the company’s “Local Delivery Sites”.

Crate and Barrel, CB2, and The Land of Nod all offer gift registries that can be accessed in the stores as well as through the websites. These gift registries are especially popular for special events like weddings, baby showers, and birthday parties.
