Composting is an environmental way of reusing yard wastes like grasses, leaves, clippings, and even the left over parts of fruits and veggies. Besides being a huge bonus to the environment, composting also creates rich fertilizer which helps our gardens grow larger and healthier fruits for all of us! The steps to creating a proper compost pile are very simple and the only real tool you will need is a compost barrel in which to store the waste until it has turned into fertilizer.

Location

The best spot to start your composting project is in the shade of a large tree. This shade will reduce the rate at which the compost decomposes and will also help maintain a large amount of the moisture within the compost pile itself. If you happen to have a suitable tree that is located near your kitchen this will make the task of composing even easier for you.

The Container

An interesting fact that most people don't realize is that the barrel needed to produce the compost is entirely optional and is in fact used to make the job easier to manage. However if you don't feel like using a compost barrel you can just maintain your compost in a large heap. The problem with this for most residential owners is that the compost pile will need to be at least six feet by six feet and around five to six feet in height. These large dimensions are needed to ensure that the compost pile maintains a temperature that is hot enough to speed up the decomposition of the pile.

The Mixture

The mixture for a compost pile isn't an exact science but the percentages should be fairly close so you can be sure to obtain only quality compost. You will usually want to mix green and brown waste together at an even mix of fifty percent each into the compost pile. The green waste is needed in order to heat the compost and increase the decomposition rate while the brown waste like dry leaves and grass add the carbon needed to keep the pile cool.
