Whatever time of year you’re reading this, it’s a great time to make the next 12 months a fantastically creative one for you, the most creative you’ve ever had. But where do you start? Well, to help you out, here’s a powerful 3-step plan for YOUR most creative year yet:

  1. Set some targets and goals. Many of us who create have something of an aversion to targets and goals. We claim we must be free as creative artists and cannot be constrained by such limiting and linear ideas. But maybe it’s your view of what goals are that is limited?

A creative goal doesn’t have to be something like: “I want to write a perfect novel about my childhood growing up in Tuscany from the years 1960 to 1968, with underlying romantic elements as well as an accurate picture of the political landscape of that era.” A goal can be a direction, rather than a specific, rigid destination. So you might have the goal of: “I want to write about my childhood in Tuscany and recall some of the fond memories I have of that time.”

  2. Create every day. The best-kept creativity secret is to create a little each day. It’s crucial to reaching the kind of creativity that comes to you as easily and naturally as breathing. Start by picking a time of day that you feel you’re most creative, then commit to creating for at least 15 minutes at this time each day.

It’s forming the daily habit that’s most important, so to make this easier for you, it’s sensible to start with just 15 minutes a day. As you build the creativity habit, you may want to adjust the time of day you create, and find the one that suits you best. You can also then extend the creativity period to 30, 45, 60 minutes and beyond, but get that daily habit established first.
