Custom Mantel State College PA

This weekend I started working on building one of the mantels legs. I'm using a combination of 1/2" MDF for the background panels and FJP 3/4" stock for the rails and styles. Both products should have a minimal of expansion and shrinkage so cracking and splitting should not be an issue.

This weekend I started working on building one of the mantels legs. I'm using a combination of 1/2" MDF for the background panels and FJP 3/4" stock for the rails and styles. Both products should have a minimal of expansion and shrinkage so cracking and splitting should not be an issue.

As you can see in the photo I've created a two sided box that wraps around the corner. The base of the leg will be built up with 1 1/4" thick WindsorOne base moulding (WOBM001). The top of the leg will get a series of mouldings that I will go into more detail in upcoming posts.

I've then applied a 11/16" band moulding to the inside of the rails and styles. This gives a great raised panel effect. I used a similar process to create a wainscoting in my dining room (I'll do a posting on that in the near future as well). Once I get both legs finished I will fill all the nail holes and joints and then prime. My plan is to pre-assemble both legs and then attach them to the wall. Finally I'll pre-assemble the mantel shelf and attach it to the legs and wall.

Today I spent 6 hours working on my mantel project and I made some good progress. Today I started by installing a piece of 3/4" stock on top of the 5/4 material that I applied last time. This 3/4" "shelf" is really just a building block to attach the lower piece of moulding and also a piece to attach the upper piece of the mantel face.
