Custom Mantels Nampa ID

Today I spent 6 hours working on my mantel project and I made some good progress. Today I started by installing a piece of 3/4" stock on top of the 5/4 material that I applied last time. This 3/4" "shelf" is really just a building block to attach the lower piece of moulding and also a piece to attach the upper piece of the mantel face.

Today I spent 6 hours working on my mantel project and I made some good progress. Working with the mouldings is time consuming and it was a long day.

Today I started by installing a piece of 3/4" stock on top of the 5/4 material that I applied last time. This 3/4" "shelf" is really just a building block to attach the lower piece of moulding and also a piece to attach the upper piece of the mantel face. As you can see in the second picture I next applied the lower piece of moulding (WindsorOne WOCM003) just below the "shelf" I face nailed it with finish nails and I also countersunk some screws down from the top of the "shelf".

After I finished with that I started applying the upper face piece which is a piece of 3/4" stock with a small cove taken out of it (WindsorOne WOCM002). I screwed in some blocks on top of the "shelf" and then nailed the face piece to that (see photo below).

Finally I applied the base moulding (WindsorOne WOBM001) around the entire base of the hearth and mantel legs. The next step will be installing the 5/4 x 10 top shelf and the final piece of crown moulding just below that. I also need to put a couple pieces of cove moulding below the lowest moulding and just below the hearth.

In our new home we built the stair case with Brazilian Cherry treads, handrails and newel post. The risers and stringers are made from poplar. Brazilian Cherry is a really beautiful wood and extremely dense. I'm told it's about 100 times harder than red oak.
