Almost a century back the Dachshund was first recognized by the AKC. Actually the North American culture embraced this breed and invariably this breed occupies a position in the top 5 registered breeds. It belongs to the family of hounds and stands apart from the other breeds with its small and long body, a sharp face and little legs.
The history of this dog is very enchanting. These dogs were utilized to flush out many animals for example the badger in the fifteenth century. Breed and Care
Exercises are a must to these dogs as they pretty active. If you live in an apartment and want a dog as a pet, then the best choice would be the Dachshund. Walking on a leash for a long time is something that they really enjoy. For more than a decade now, these dogs have proved to be very brilliant. Therefore, this dog is fit to be trained with many tricks and dressed for a lot of dog show competitions and trials.
One character of the Dachshund which most of them are not happy is that they are very adamant. It loses its concentration very fast because of its high energy. Sometimes they are so relentless that they just would not listen. But, if proper and regular training is provided like any other dog the Dachshund too makes a lovely pet. If you get this dog when it is a pup, then it becomes one of the members of the family and will be faithful for life.
The dog has to be groomed well to make it look attractive. You can groom it once in a fortnight or a week. If the dog had been out, then a bath is a must.
Information on Health
The life span of a Dachshund is about 12 14 years. These dogs are really fit and does not require too much of care like other dogs. The only thing is, due to its long body, there are chances they might have problems with the disc or spine. Other diseases which might affect them are deafness, seizures, joint problems and diabetes. Once they cross six years, it is suggested that you have their eyes checked regularly. If proper exercises and food is given, then these dogs have no problem of obesity.
