There are a lot of aspects that go into protecting your home from water, wind, and other damage that the weather causes. One of the more important aspects to taking care of your home from the elements that are not taken care of often is the importance of your roof gutters. If you do not have roof gutters that function properly your home can be subject to serious damage. It also does not look good for the aesthetics of your home when your roof gutters are clogged or broken.

It is an important home improvement tool to know in how to clean and repair your roof gutters. With an entirely new instillation of a draining system on your home generally requires professional help the basic gutter repairs can be done yourself. As with any home improvement project you must have the right tools to do the job. Having extra pieces of the rain gutter is better than not having enough because chances are, sooner or later, you will have to replace a broken gutter.

Most of the gutters that are used today on homes are made of plastic and are especially made so that they will snap together. This makes replacement of the gutters much easier. When replacing a plastic gutter it is important to make sure that the gutter snaps into place tightly to ensure that it drains in a proper way. Be careful when taking off old pieces of gutter because you do not want to break it leaving a small piece of plastic in the area you need to snap in the new gutter piece. After you replace the new piece of gutter take a hose and run it down the gutter to make sure it drains properly. Do not wait until the first rains, as there could be water damage if it is not correctly put on.

IMPORTANT: Considering that gutters are on the roof you need to be extra careful as sometimes the roof can get slick especially after rains. Wear shoes with good traction and always use a safe and sturdy ladder.

You should also check your gutters regularly especially the gutter line after a heavy rain. If there are areas that have pooled up with water it could mean a leak in the drainage system. It is important to repair the leak as soon as you can so that water damage will not occur when it rains again. It is also very important to clean the gutters and downspouts on a regular basis as if the gutters are clogged it can cause water damage to your home when water runs out of the gutter.

By regularly maintaining a gutter you can ensure that your home will have less of a chance of water damage. Make sure to do a thorough inspection of the gutters before the rainy season to see if they will drain when the rain does come.
