Whenever there is new construction inside a home there is most likely going to be something to do with paint that will be present. For the sake of argument lets say that you have added a new wall to the home to make one room into two rooms. For this you will be using drywall and then paint. However there is a step that a lot of people tend to forget when it comes to this issue and that is of course the priming of the walls.

Drywall is nothing more then paper stretched over plaster board. The paper on the drywall is very absorbent and will suck paint in like no one's business. This is why it is so important to prime new walls, even though most people will forget about this step all together.

Drywall is the most common form of wall material currently in use. It is easy to use and makes a very nice looking surface when it is completed. To use drywall you need to be versed in using joint compound, which is similar to plaster to make sure that there are no gaps between the pieces of drywall and so on.

When you are getting ready to paint a new construction wall you will need to do several things in the preparation department. These steps are all very important and none of them should ever be skipped no matter what. The failure to follow these steps can result in the wall looking bad in most cases and can also cost you a bunch more money by the time you are done.

First and foremost you need to make sure that the wall is smooth all the way around. Many people who are not well versed in drywall will not remember to completely sand the surface of the joint compound once they have applied it. With this means that you may have to apply more joint compound as some of the compound that has dried may create holes that need to be filled.

Once you have the sanding complete you need to get yourself some primer paint. In most cases this will come in an off white or flat white color. The purpose of priming is not the looks of the paint but instead to prevent the drywall from sucking up all the paint that is being applied for decorative purposes.

Role or brush the primer onto the surface in nice smooth strokes, being sure to cover the entire wall with primer.

Before you apply the final paint you should be sure that the primer has dried. You should also check to be sure that you have covered all the wall with primer to prevent the soaking of the new paint in some areas and not in others.

WARNING: Before you begin any painting project, be sure that you are working in a well ventilated area to prevent illness or injury. Also, be sure that you read and follow all instructions on the materials that you are using to prevent injury or illness. Be sure to wear the proper safety clothing and follow all safety precautions to prevent illness or injury.
