3 Tips to help Reduce Risk when Receiving Dollar Store Merchandise

Author: Bob Hamilton

Have you ever had one of those days? It seem like there are too many things to do and just plain not enough time to do them? And then as you tackle task after task each one seems to take twice as long as you had planned. We all have those days. The important thing to remember is that the order of your priorities remains the same, and as the situation changes priorities may well dictate that tasks change as well. One perfect example is incoming merchandise. When opening a dollar store always set that as a top priority for your store. Don’t risk having problems that affect sales and customer satisfaction later just because you were too busy to stop and take the correct actions when freight arrives. In this article I present 3 tips to help reduce risk when receiving dollar store merchandise.

Tip 1: When opening a dollar store always immediately bring incoming freight into your receiving area. Never allow boxes or pallets to be left sitting outside or in unprotected, insecure areas. Doing so risks theft. With you freight sitting out of sight there is no chance for you to protect it. It takes only seconds for someone to pick up a box and walk off undetected. Losing a small box with 288 necklaces inside could cost you the profit for almost the entire day.

Tip 2: It is important to protect incoming freight from the elements. Never allow boxes and pallets to stacked where they are exposed to the weather. Heat, rain, snow, wind and all other inclement weather situations expose dollar store merchandise to risk. Some items will quickly melt in heat. Others will decompose when exposed to water. You never know exactly what’s inside those boxes. Protect them by immediately moving then to your receiving area.

Tip 3: Make formally receiving incoming merchandise a top priority. Never allow anything to delay the check-in process you’ve established for your store. Formally check merchandise to make sure everything you ordered and was claimed as shipped is there. Immediately find out if there is any damage to the merchandise. And of course the goal is to have newly arrived merchandise on the sales floor of your dollar store as soon as possible so it will start making you money.

When opening a dollar store avoid the temptation to allow incoming dollar store merchandise to sit without going through your receiving process. Make it your practice to immediately bring merchandise inside. Be sure it is safe and protected as soon as possible after arrival.

To your success when opening a dollar store!
