Domain Names

By creating your own domain name for your company or by trade marking your business logo onto the web, you are broadening your customer base by the millions. The Internet is the new hotspot for existing businesses and entrepreneurs. When a website is created from your domain name, it is like starting a worldwide enterprise. This is the perfect way to grow as a business and to increase your profit margin for only a small registration fee.

1. InterNic

InterNic stands for the Internet Network Information Center. This is the old name for a collection of the three most popular computer service companies. These three companies originally were formed and then contracted by the United States National Service Foundation. These three companies are the top service providers in relation to the registering of a domain name in the .COM, .NET, .EDU, and .ORG fields. These are still considered to be top-level domains. These computer servers are responsible for the maintenance of root-zone name servers, which form the building blocks of the domain system. The purpose of root-zone servers is to convert human-friendly domain names into computer-friendly IP (internet provider) addresses. These addresses are scripted with a unique sequence of numbers. The computer IP addresses serve worldwide websites, making their content available and traceable on the web. As you surf the web, your computer literally identifies which name server to consult and then translates the domain name to an IP address.

2. How to Register a Domain Name

A domain name is used to uniquely identify your company. This name is used for your company website or your personal e-mail address. By creating a domain name, you are broadening your business to international heights. A domain name lets you have a website in which you can offer your services and sell goods to people around the world. When a pre-customer goes to research a specific topic in the field of your company, your domain name or website will come up in the search, and the customer is put in direct business with your company via the Internet. Communication can be conducted through e-mail. Any business that expands to the Internet is increasing their customer base, sometimes even into the millions. This is a great way to expand without having to involve a lot of money. A domain name is registered for a small fee, and then depending on the domain software you purchase, you may pay a small monthly fee. All this is peanuts when the profits that can be made are considered. Many small entrepreneurs to large corporations have branched out onto the web. It is the new wireless way to conduct business more efficiently right from a personal computer; however, in order to do this, one must start with a domain name.

To select and register the domain name you desire, you must first choose a domain register. A domain register - there are several websites that offer this service for a small fee - will have you type in the domain name you want. After you have typed in your desired domain name or business trademark, the register will search through millions of domain names in a few seconds. When this search is completed, the register will inform you if your domain is available or not. You might have to perform this task several times to find an available domain name. The more unique your domain name is, the better your chances of acquiring that domain for your website. Always remember that a domain name is the first thing a customer will see when contacting your website. A catchy domain name will set you apart from the competition and will bring greater customer traffic to your website. After you find out that your domain name is open, you will then select the special domain services you would like to have. These services include special privacy features, monitor changes, web hosting plans, and much more. Some of these services will come with a low monthly fee. Next, you select how long you want to have your domain name registered. A domain name can be registered for only a few months or up to two years. The last step in this quick and easy process is to enter your billing information and your contact information. After the information has been processed, the domain name has now become your property. You now have an Internet business in a matter of minutes. Now, wouldn’t’t it be nice if all businesses were this easy to set up.

3. If Your Domain Name is Taken

What do you do if the one domain name you really want is taken? If you have a valid United States trademark that was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, then you have a legal case. You must be able to demonstrate in court that whoever has your desired domain name is illegally infringing on your patented business trademark. If the court agrees with you, they will have the person relinquish control of the domain name in question, and in essence, hand the domain name over to you. The domain will then be yours. At times, these proceedings can be expensive and time-consuming.

There is another avenue that you might want to consider. There are domain registers that will try to acquire the domain name for you. Sometimes, people will offer the specific domain name up for sale. The resister will approach the individual who has your domain name, while protecting your identity, and then ask whether the other person would like to sell that particular domain name. If this cannot be done and you do have a registered logo, then the best option is to go through the court system. Besides these two options mentioned above, there is not much else you can do if your domain name is taken. You can always choose a similar domain name or get creative and choose a domain name that will really catch the consumer’s eye. Remember there are millions of domain names that haven’t been used, so don’t get discouraged.

4. Domain Name Renewal

Sometimes, domain names must be renewed in order for them to remain active. Many times, the register you have purchased your domain name through will contact you via e-mail sixty days before the expiration date of your domain name. If you fail to renew your domain name within the sixty-day period, the domain name will then go into a five-day grace period. The domain name can be renewed for the normal price during this time period. Your entire Internet services such as web hosting or e-mail will become inactivated. If the domain name is still not renewed after the five-day grace period, it is deactivated and placed into a thirty-day redemption period. If thirty days elapses, the domain name can be chosen and purchased by another party. With some register programs, you are able to synchronize multiple domain names into one neat package. This way you are able to renew multiple domain names at one convenient time. Also, when you register your domain name, you will be asked if you would like to sign up for an automatic renewal service. With this feature, your credit card will be billed twenty days before the expiration date of your domain name. To consolidate all your domain names, you must make sure that for each individual domain name, the contact information is the same. This will allow you to monitor, renew, and control multiple domains. With this added bonus, your web business is more organized and profitable. You no longer have to worry about individual expiration dates and renewal fees.

5. Domain Transfer

After sixty days of service, if you are unhappy with your domain name register, you can transfer your domain name to another register provider. Due to a recent change in the com/net registry, anyone transferring from those registers must first obtain an authorization code before transferring a domain name. To obtain an authorization code, one must contact their register to receive a special authorization. This code will be required before transfer can take place.

Before your domain name is transferred to another register, you must first search the domain databank of the new register to make sure your specific name is available. As long as your domain name is available and has not expired, you will be able to transfer to the new register in a week’s time period. The new register will contact you via e-mail with the appropriate transfer form and information. Some people transfer their domain names in order to take advantage of lower domain rates. This allows you to keep your same website while saving money.

6. Multilingual Domains

With a multilingual domain name, you are able to maximize your revenue potential and increase your customer base. This is a good feature for potential companies to establish their presence on the Internet. Customer satisfaction is increased because now customers can navigate your website in the language they are most comfortable with. With over thirty languages that your website can be translated into, you are extending your online brand identity, while still having the same security and privacy features. This will strengthen your brand name recognition and increase the flow of traffic on your website. Multilingual domains have been proven hands down to increase user satisfaction, while the new customer is enjoying their improved navigation experience. How a multilingual domain works is that the current register will use Punycode and valid name checks to convert the domain name and website into exact native language characters. When the domain is in the Zone file, it is internationalized and will appear as encoded ASCII character string. Some domain names are hard to convert because they contain too many characters or hyphens. Your register will settle this issue for you.

7. Domain Extras

There are several extra features to consider when registering a domain name. You can choose to monitor any domain name, even if you do not own that name. If your favorite domain name was unavailable, you can monitor this name and be alerted when it does become available for purchase. By monitoring specific domain names, you can keep track of your competition. You will be alerted each time a similar domain name as yours is registered. Other monitoring features will notify you when any of your domain name attributes have changed such as the server, register status, or expiration date. With domain monitoring, you do not have to worry about keeping track of all the little details. Instead, you will be reminded of everything through e-mail.

8. Domain Retailers

The business of domain names has opened a new entrepreneur market on the Internet. Domain retailers can offer domain registration through a simple credit card process by using the retailers own turnkey website. Many of these websites are multilingual, so your client base is widely expanded from the initial launch of your business. Domain retailers can set their own pricing and markup of domain name registering. The retailer is in charge of all the products and services they want to offer. The retail software is easy to install and allows you to enter into a profitable domain retail market. You can also offer web hosting for businesses through the implementation of award-winning management software. The software is integrated with many helpful tools and support features. As the retailer, you pick your own pricing plan and have full control over your domain business. Retailers can also establish their own network of other retailers. This allows you to track sales and commissions better. Thousands of entrepreneurs have begun their own business by registering domain names. This is a great way to achieve success and to become your own boss.

9. Domain Investors

Domain investors are businesses that invest in multiple domain names. Many times, domain investors receive wholesale pricing, privacy, and Global DNS record management. Whether you are a domain name speculator, a content developer, or manage a large domain name portfolio, investment software is the latest in the industry and has been successful in the management of multiple domain names.
