(NC)-Ahh, summer. The air is warm, flowers are in bloom and everything feels alive. When the weather is beautiful, it's natural to want to spend time outside. How about a visit to a farmers' market or outdoor festival? Or, if you're looking for more exercise, try hitting a hiking trail. Your provincial tourism or parks website can provide you with all kinds of ideas and information.

Of course, dogs also love the summer air. While many enjoy car trips, some find it a traumatic experience. About one in six dogs suffer from motion sickness. Motion sickness has a range of symptoms. Dogs appear nervous and may drool and swallow excessively, vomit and have diarrhea. With motion sickness, not only does your dog feel awful, you can be left with quite a mess to clean up. It may even be enough to discourage you from venturing off again with your dog in tow.

Fortunately, for you and your pooch, motion sickness can be prevented. If you've noticed these symptoms when travelling with your dog, talk with your veterinarian about taking preventative measures. For example, a new product to prevent motion sickness-associated vomiting is now available through your veterinarian.

So next time you head off for some summer air, take your dog along. If you haven't travelled long distances with your dog before, remember that he may get restless, so try to take pit stops every one or two hours. Not only will this let him run off some excess energy, it will let you both explore new areas together.
