Wood floors in your home can be a great addition as they are very attractive and classy. Wood floors are also very practical as well. Wood floors can stand up to all types of weather and last for a long time but they must be taken care of. If you get any water or liquid on your floor that sits for some time mold can develop. But you can fix wood floors if this does occur.

Mold can especially develop on your wood floor if you have any leaky plants or flowers in the room. The leak may be very small and you may not notice the leak for some time but then you can find out that the wood floor around the plant or flower looks discolored. When you lift the plant up off the wood floor you can see the mold that has begun to form in the cracks.

However you can remedy this moldy situation, as there are some ways that you can get rid of the mold on your wood floor. If the wood floor is finished like many other floors the wood can stay in tact and it will not be damaged, but the finish may see a little damage.

Here are some things you will need:

Floor scraper
Sanding sponge
Stain
Polyurethane finish

Take these steps in order to rid you wood floor of mold

The first thing you need to do is pull along the grain of the wood on your floor and then adjust the pressure so the edge will be scraping the finish. Make sure you do not dig too deep though because you may mar the wood.

Have a sanding sponge that is for finish removal. Sand along the grain of the wood until most or all of the mold is removed from the wood floor. If there is still some of the mold residue after you sand you can use a little bit of diluted bleach on the sanded area. Make sure only to use a little bit of the diluted bleach, as by using too much it can damage and even ruin your wood floor.

When you are finished either sanding or bleaching run some 200 grit sandpaper over the wood lightly. Then re-finish the wood with the same finish that it was originally finished with. If you do not have any of this get a match that is close to it but be careful as matching can be hard and if done hastily can cause your wood floor to look discolored.

TIP: After you have tried to remove the mold and you still see a significant amount do not keep sanding and bleaching as you are only making it more likely that you will severely damage your wood floor. If this is the case consult a professional. It can cost less for a professional to remove the mold from your wood floor than replacing it entirely.
