The 2nd TransOhio Transgender and Ally Symposium is quickly approaching! This year, the symposium will be during the weekend of August 14-16, 2009. All symposium workshops and presentations will be on-site at Capital University Law School in downtown Columbus! Transgender issues continue to increase in prominence in the national and state consciousness, with increasing media attention and new significant legal developments that affect all facets of our society. TransOhio is an organization that continues to serve the Ohio transgender and ally communities by providing services, education, support and advocacy, which promotes and improves the health, safety and life experience of the Ohio transgender individual and community. This year, our keynote speaker is academic and author, Helen Boyd. Helen is the author of My Husband Betty (Thunder's Mouth, 2004) which was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award. Her second book, She's Not the Man I Married: My Life with a Transgender Husband (Seal Press, 2007), has been called "a postmodern reflection on transness" by Jennifer Finney Boylan. She has presented workshops at many conferences and has given keynote talks at gatherings such as First Event. Boyd's writing has also appeared in anthologies edited by Matt(ilda) Bernstein Sycamore, Vern Bullough, and Michelle Tea, and she lectures regularly at colleges. Boyd has also taught Gender Studies courses at Merrimack College (MA) and at Lawrence University (WI), where she also taught a course on transgender lives. Boyd was also a finalist for a 2009 A Room of Her Own Foundation Grant. We have over twenty-five workshops and presentations are scheduled for focus tracks that include: ** Health & Safety ** Legal & Employment ** Partners, Spouses and Family ** Religion and Spirituality ** Youth & Students ** Arts, Culture and Media Registration opens on Monday, May 11, 2009!
