Incentive programs, merchandise discounts and motivational meetings are useful tools, but what makes a job more than "just a job" is organized programs that engage employees and create a sense of community in the workplace. Efforts like after-hours social activities, pot-luck lunches and company volunteer days develop camaraderie and demonstrate an employer's investment in their employees' interests.

Employers today are challenged to find innovative ways to connect with their young employees. As teens become more attuned to new media and online spaces, employers are exploring these outlets for new ways to interact with and attract the Generation Y employee. For example, the social networking site Facebook allows employees to communicate with their staff through company-focused groups and event notices. Some companies are going one step further and have created their own online communities for employees.

McDonald's administers StationM, a forum for employees to share their thoughts, post photos and ask questions. "It's great to have an online space designed with our lifestyles in mind," says Amanda Wilson, McDonald's crew and StationM moderator. "Not only does the site let us know about upcoming opportunities with the company, it also helps develop a strong sense of community that we can carry into our restaurants." Community-based sites help engage youth by providing an outlet for them to communicate and network with one another.

In order for companies to effectively communicate with their employees, it's important to continue exploring new channels for these messages in a way that is meaningful and helps to create positive work environments. A small amount of effort will help ensure that today's youth are tomorrow's greatest assets.
