Thinking about going back to school? Community colleges offer many advantages for the working adult. Community colleges offer flexible schedules because some programs offer evening or weekend classes. Tuition is generally cheaper, and it takes less time to complete a program of study. If attending a community college as an adult is something that might interest you, consider a few things to make the enrollment process as smooth as possible.

STEP 1:

Take the ACT/SAT. In order to enroll into any college, placement scores must be obtained to assess what initial classes students should take. Some colleges use the ACT or the SAT scores to place students in their initial classes. Sometimes college will use their own placement tests to determine if any remedial courses need to be taken before students are ready for the prerequisite courses.

STEP 2:

Decide on a Payment Method. Decide how you plan to pay for your college courses. Community colleges are more affordable compared to some universities, but there are many payment options available. If you currently work full or part time, some employers offer tuition assistance. Talk to a financial counselor about scholarships, grants, and student loans. A FAFSA, free application for student aid, can be completed in order to apply for financial assistance.

STEP 3:

Transcripts. If you attended a previous college or completed high school, be prepared to provide an official sealed copy of the transcripts. Some places require a small fee and most colleges will not take an opened unofficial transcript that has simply been copied.

STEP 4:

Complete the Application. Obtain an application from the community college of your choice. Read the directions carefully and complete the required sections. There may be a small application fee. After the college processes your application, the orientation and registration process begins. Good luck!
